Mullen to host football combine

Ponderosa-sponsored testing and drills to run on Friday; event is free and open to all in-state seniors.

Mullen will host a free football combine on Friday.

Available for players who will graduate in 2021, it’s a combination of the Mustangs as well as the Ponderosa Mustangs and their supporters to make it happen.

“Essentially,” first-year Mullen head coach Jeremy Bennett said, “we’ll put the kids through an NFL combine with drills and testing, and electronic times for them to send out to college coaches. And we’re doing it at no charge.”

Ponderosa head coach Jaron Cohen gave Bennett and Mullen credit “for stepping up” and “we’re just trying to get some kids some verifiable times. There has been a lot of panic (because of the coronavirus, COVID-19), they can’t get to college camps and they didn’t get to run and all of that … but they’ll get a document and their coaches can send it out.”

Any in-state senior can participate. There will be opportunities to establish accurate height and weight, and participate in broad jump, vertical jump, 40-yard dash and professional shuttle drill with the cones. There may also be chances to record bench press.

Bennett said safe practices will be in order: “We’ll rolI in 25 at a time.”

Cohen also credited Ponderosa strength coach Patrick Nolan of Pivotal Sports Performance in Parker as well as Matt Logston of Athletafied for their time and effort.

The combine will run from 5-9 p.m. and Cohen said 140 hopefuls are confirmed, plus additional inquiries continue to be made.
