MBN Roundup: Cross country, boys tennis

Runners take fourth in both genders at Creek meet, headed by Dudzic and O'Connell; netters continue busy schedule, including against Niwot.

The schedules across Colorado continue to change, the numbers of meets are lower, as are the permitted numbers of runners and teams, and there is mask-wearing until the starter fires the pistol to begin races.

But Mullen keeps on running in this Season A of a cross-country campaign during the coronavirus (COVID-19) and the Mustangs are running well.

On Saturday, competing in the Cherry Creek 5k in Greenwood Village, the Class 4A Mustangs continued competing against 5A foes.

In boys, Mullen ran fourth as a team in the eight-school group, headed by a couple of top-10 finishes. Senior Michael Dudzic was fifth in 16 minutes, 40 seconds, and junior Jack Tolbert came in seventh 10 seconds later.

Senior Aidan Schwarz (16th, 17:22), junior Owen McCarter (31st, 18:10) and freshman Jacob Sushinski (32nd, 18:13) accounted for the Mullen scoring.

The Mustangs totaled 91 points. Cherokee Trail (43) was first, followed by Cherry Creek (60) and Grandview (72).

For girls, Mullen also was fourth and topped by sophomore Amy O’Connell, fifth in 19:28.

Freshman Julia Brown (17th, 21:22), sophomore Kennedy McCamley (25th, 22:06), sophomore Kira Van der Steen (27th, 22:24) and sophomore Octavia Gomez (30th, 22:53) gave a Mullen a score of 104.

Cherokee Trail enjoyed the gender sweep, finishing first with an impressive 20. Cherry Creek was second (48) and Arapahoe third (95).

Concerning boys tennis, the Mustangs have had a busy schedule that will continue this week.
Mullen’s Varsity III team dropped a 5-2 dual meet to 5A Cherry Creek on Thursday in league and will have a mix of opponents over the next several days.

Today (Aug. 31), the Mustangs will host Grandview in league, 3:45 p.m.; welcome regular 4A challenger Niwot on Wednesday, 3 p.m.; entertain 4A Kent Denver on Thursday, 3:45 p.m.; and be at Overland in Aurora in league on Saturday, 9 a.m.

Said Mustangs head coach Jacob Ohrman: “Niwot is the (big) match, in my opinion. Heritage (which the Mustangs downed 6-1 in a dual last week) was big for us, it was a top-6 or top-7 team in 5A, but Niwot’s the match.”
