Mullen flat on Senior Day

Mustangs fall behind early, can't handle Eaglecrest in indifferent 9-2 loss as regular season and league tournament near.

In a word, Mullen head coach Dave Atencio said, it was disappointing.

It was Senior Day on Wednesday, the Mustangs were hosting a team that they had earlier defeated on the road in the Centennial League and they had a chance to move up in the league standings as well as possibly work toward a home game in next week’s regular season-ending league tournament.

However, a rough start led to a 9-2 loss to Eaglecrest at Santo “Doc” Scavuzzo Field, one that stung.

“Disappointing is a good word for it,” Mustangs head coach Dave Atencio said. “I was disappointed in the effort … I thought the girls would be more excited to play on Senior Day.”

All told, Eaglecrest pounded out 17 hits, 15 of them singles. Seven of the safeties came in the first inning, when the Raptors (3-8 overall, 2-8 in league) grabbed a 4-0 lead. It grew to 5-0 after two innings and 8-0 through five.

On the other hand, Mullen, now 3-8, 3-7, had its first 10 batters go down in order. The Mustangs managed only four hits. They plated two runs in the sixth, but left the bases loaded. They also were guilty of three errors.

Bella Aragon, Madelyn Bertsch, Maggie Bertsch and Lucia Hurtado hit safely for Mullen.

“We had a good practice on Tuesday,” Atencio said. “And it was all out in front of us.”

The Mustangs will finish their regular schedule on Saturday, when they will host Cherry Creek in a doubleheader, 10 a.m. and noon.

Once league play is completed on Saturday, teams will be seeded and have single games next week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, according to Atencio, before seeding for the postseason.
