Senior and 2 others finish in the top 10 to earn all-Centennial League; boys finish as runner-up as a group.

AURORA – In what has been a limited, even bizarre cross-country season during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Mullen’s boys grabbed a high point on Wednesday.

The Mustangs, competing in the Centennial League Championships held at Cherokee Trail, finished second as a group and placed three runners in the top 10 to earn all-league honors.

Head coach Joe Welling called it “huge!”

Michael Dudzic paced Mullen. The senior ran 16 minutes, 46.90 seconds to take fourth and was just more than a half-minute off the winning time. He was followed by junior Jack Tolbert, who was fifth in 17:07.10. Senior Patrick Keeley was seventh, 17:18.90.

Backed by Aidan Schwarz (22nd, 17:53.00) and junior Travis Hockin (31st, 18:10.30), the Mustangs totaled 69 to Cherokee Trail’s 46.

For girls, sophomore Amy O’Connell was 14th (20:11.50). Kira Van der Steen (20th, 21:38.20), Brynn Konrad (22:08.40), Octavia Gomez (31st, 23:19.50) and Kennedy McCamley (38th, 23:48.00) also accounted for the Mustangs (126) finishing fifth among seven teams.

Defending Class 5A state champion Arapahoe (32) was first.
