Dominguez to be a Mountain Lion

Mustangs' super sub commits to UCCS basketball; entertains ideas of becoming a doctor.

She’s not a member of her schoolgirl team’s starting lineup, but so what?

She and her family looked around at other colleges, including out of state, but why leave Colorado when what she wants is nearby?

And she probably won’t be an academic casualty – her aspirations center around becoming a doctor, and in the current climate, who can say no to an M.D.?

So it is that Mullen’s Alexa Dominguez announced her commitment to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs basketball on Friday.

“I’m very excited,” Dominguez said. “It was just a great thing for me and my family  – they loved the school and it’s a great fit for me. The environment and coaches are amazing.”

The 5-foot-8 Dominguez is interesting. She doesn’t start for the Mustangs, who won the 2019 Class 4A championship and advanced to the ’20 title game before it was shut down because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but doesn’t care. Her energy off the bench is considerable as is her knack for rebounding, making steals, playing defense and scoring at key times.

“She’s the epitome of hard work and dedication,” Mustangs head coach Frank Cawley said. “She’s the first one in and last one out. She has such a great attitude and works hard for everybody to get better. It’s the perfect place for her. She’ll play and she’ll be a star. I’m thrilled.”

As far as potential playing time for the Mountain Lions, Dominguez said she was told “just the usual college stuff … ‘expect to start at the bottom and you have to earn your spot. If you work hard, you could be a player.  It was good to hear everything from a usual college experience.”

Dominguez wasn’t intent on heading out of state, she said, but now that she has committed locally, “It’s definitely better. I get to stay in touch and be close at home. It’s nice.”

She has a 3.8 grade-point average and yearns to become a doctor.

In 2019-20, Dominguez helped the Mustangs go 20-7, when they had no seniors. To date, she and teammate Megan Pohs (Regis) have committed.

“It will be great to go watch them,” Cawley said. “Absolutely, we’ll take a Mullen bus to go see them play ... perfect places for both of them.

“It’s exactly why we do this.”
