Centennial League hoops won't have gender DHs

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
The boy-girl doubleheaders, so popular in the league, will be a casualty of COVID-19 in the new Season B; however, a full Centennial regular season is on tap.

The well-received boys and girls basketball doubleheaders in the Centennial League will not occur in the new Season B.

According to Cherry Creek athletic director Jaison WiIkins, who is overseeing the sport for the league, representatives of the eight schools will remain cautious in case there is a spike of COVID-19.

Instead of one gender tipping off at 5:30 p.m. during evening games and the other at 7 p.m., the two will play opposite each other. So if Mullen girls, for example, host Grandview, the Mustangs boys will be at Grandview.

A 14-game schedule will account for a full league slate in the regular season. Originally, Centennial teams, which were slated for only a dozen regular-season games, were to play two games that were to be classified as nonleague, seven that were to be league games and three in a season-ending tournament.

Varsity games will be preceded by junior-varsity games. And it is expected that no fans will be permitted.

In addition, the league’s lower levels, freshmen and sophomore teams, will play following the same format on Saturdays.

Wilkins said the boy-girl doubleheaders will return in the future. The idea is underlined by the facts that the already smaller prep crowds, primarily fueled by students, don’t have to decide which games to attend and families with male and female competitors can view both at the one site.

Preseason practice for Season B will open on Jan. 18 with first contests on Jan. 25.  Basketball, ice hockey, skiing, girls swimming and diving, wrestling and competitive spirit have been approved.
