There is opportunity for Mullen ice hockey in the new Season B.

The Mustangs have returning experience and the sport has opted for two classifications. They will be in Class 4A.

“It’s a good thing for us,” Mullen head coach Devon Brady said. “It offers competitive balance and gives us a chance to be
competitive.”

The inner core for the Mustangs looks to be strong as all defensemen and six of their top-seven forwards return. Senior defenseman Eoin Canavan, senior defenseman Aidan Cashman, senior center Nick Gilbert, senior center Hayden Klem and senior wing Robby Witwer should highlight a roster that lost only five seniors from the 2019-2020 team.

Brady said the Mustangs, who had been seeking goalie help, will include Kai Bingham of the Denver School of Science and Technology.

The regular season will begin next week.

Of the 37 teams, 17 are in 4A. Mullen is in the 4A North League with Air Academy, Colorado Academy, Kent Denver, Liberty and Rampart.

There will be 13 games in the regular season, including one in nonleague, and a four-team playoff bracket (three league winners and an at-large berth). The playoff site is TBD.

In a preseason coaches poll, Mullen debuted at No. 9. Interest and excitement are on the rise, even in a season affected by the coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic with its delays and restrictions.

“We should have some fun … literally,” Brady said.
