Robby Witwer, Student-Athlete of the Week
High-school sports: Ice hockey (right wing) and lacrosse (midfielder).
What I’ve done lately: Has 2 goals and an assist in helping the Mustangs to a 2-0 start.
Grade-point average: 4.47.
Class: Senior.
Why I attend Mullen: My Dad (Rob) was the one who originally found out about Mullen and he was one of the last classes (1989) of all boys. Growing up, it was off our radar, but my older brother (John) came for a visit and he really liked it. They had a hockey program here, there was the Catholic side of things, the great education, the (Lasallian) Core Principles (and Mom Heather is on the faculty) … it became a huge part of our lives.
The best thing about my sport: I think any hockey player would say the whole culture among teammates is really unique. Whether it’s in the locker room or on the ice, in no other sport do you get closer with teammates. There’s something about hockey that really, really promotes that friendship and working together for a common goal. I got to start my freshman year and got to be a bigger part of the picture with my class and it has been great to see how the team has grown and changed.
In my future: I’ve been looking at my older brother, John, who’s playing club hockey at (Mississippi) … considering Georgia, Wisconsin, Miami (Ohio) and Vanderbilt; undecided on major.
Pre-Game ritual: For the most part, I’m a go-play guy, nothing specific, but you will catch me before the game -- usually I’ll hop out of the locker room and just sit and watch the ice being made with the Zamboni going.
Favorite college team: I’ll catch a couple of Ole Miss hockey games and will watch Ole Miss football, too.
Why I play: I think there really is no other way to describe it – the love of the game. No other sport has the camaraderie. I’ve played since I was 8 years old. It’s the wind in my face, the cold air, the physicality, the back-and-forth, and scoring goals. To have the opportunity to represent my high school in my sport of choice has always been so special. And when we have so many (fans) on the glass, I will remember it forever.
