Big 3rd quarter boosts 'Stangs

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Mullen shakes off mediocre start to blow out Eaglecrest 58-20 and win its 5th game in succession; Mustangs have allowed just 95 points over the stretch.

After a so-so first half on Friday night, Mullen erupted in the third quarter to take down Eaglecrest 58-20 in the Centennial League.

The Mustangs, top-ranked in Class 4A, won their fifth consecutive game and improved to 5-1 overall and in league.

Mustangs head coach Frank Cawley called it a close first half against the 5A Raptors and a poor second quarter. Mullen led 19-4 after eight minutes and only by 27-14 at halftime.

However, behind Megan Pohs, Gracie Gallegos and Imani Perez, the Mustangs established order and turned it into a blowout shortly after the break. Mullen outscored Eaglecrest 24-2 in the third as Pohs scored 10 of her game-high 16 points and Gallegos seven of her 13.

Cawley said “it was Imani’s best game of the year” despite scoring two points and “Megan was special in the third quarter.”

Eaglecrest dropped its third consecutive game to fall to 3-3, 3-3.

Defensively, the Mustangs have allowed an aggregate 95 points over their past five games.

Pohs (four) and Gallegos (three) combined for seven of Mullen’s 10 3-pointers.

Mullen will cap its first go-round in the Centennial on Wednesday, Feb. 17, on the road at Arapahoe, 7 p.m.
