Net news: A whole new experience

New Season C debuts this week and there are new schedules, new times and new circumstances.

It will be an interesting new Season C in Colorado, an additional period created through the fallout  from the fall because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Sports ordinarily contested once the school year begins have been moved voluntarily or otherwise to the next seven weeks and Mullen volleyball certainly qualifies under the arresting category.

Coach Jeff Oliver’s fourth year in command of the program will have challenges.

For one, his Mustangs lost 10 seniors from the school’s most-recent team that last played a match on Nov. 9, 2019.

For another, the Mustangs may have only two players who have seen any kind of varsity time. Sophomore Madeline Carr, and seniors Caroline Harmon, Kylie Lawrence and Jessica Oates-Stamm figure to be at the head of the Mustangs mix.

For another, the new Season C will be in direct conflict with club play. Oliver said he “can see both sides,” but realizes having the two go head-to-head “is not a good mix.” Plus, he added, the situation “puts kids in a tough spot.”

And for still another, Class 4A Mullen’s entire regular-season schedule will consist of 5A Centennial league teams. “From a volleyball perspective,” Oliver said, “it’s probably the best (league) in the state.”

The Mustangs are to get going this week, opening at Arapahoe on Wednesday, March 17, 6:30 p.m. There will be 14 league games into late April and regionals are to be completed by May 1.

“It’s going to be interesting,” Oliver said. “We’ll be a young team and a lot of the new kids will have to step up for us.”
