Despite all of the problems that have involved high-school sports with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, there is opportunity.

And Mullen sees some of it in Season C.

The Mustangs return a strong roster, as in accomplished returnees as well as some newer talent, for veteran head coach Matthew Guglielmo.

“We had a really good preseason,” he said. “And we really feel good about things.”

Mullen’s cast could be considerably productive. The athletic A.J. Gamueda, Cole Dempsey, Eli Kerschen, Nolan Cooper, Andrew DeBerardinis and Ethan Lehman figure to be at the front of Mustangs doings.

In goal, it will be Mitch Ringman and Andrew McGrath.

As one of multiple sports historically contested during the fall, Mustangs boys soccer hasn’t played a prep match since Nov. 5, 2019, when it lost 6-1 to Denver North in the Class 4A playoffs.

“We think we capn lay and we’re eager to get going,” Guglielmo said.

As part of the COVID restrictions, there will be 10 matches for the Mustangs – seven in the 5A Centennial League for the usual one go-round, followed by a three-match league tournament seeded by finish.

“Our league is tough,” Guglielmo said. “Everyone can play.”

Into the postseason, the 4A bracket will be half of its usual size, 16 teams as opposed to 32.

Mullen was to open on Thursday, March 18, on the road against Cherry Creek at the Stutler Bowl, but it was postponed. The Mustangs are set to go on Tuesdya, March 23, against Smoky Hull at home, 4:30 p.m.
