Former UNC Bear, an assistant with Mullen girls, takes over for Susan Stone.

Jessica Sanford has been named head coach of Mullen boys swimming and diving.

She takes over for Susan Stone, who had success heading both the boys and girls programs for the Mustangs.

Sanford was an assistant for Stone with the girls in the new Season B, when  they finished second in Class 4A. Sanford will lead the Mustangs in the new Season D that will begin competition on Monday, May 3.

“I’m so excited, so stoked I got this,” Sanford said. “I loved coaching the girls and it will be super fun to coach the boys.”

Sanford brings seven years of assorted coaching experience. The native of suburban Chicago was a significant competitor at distinguished Naperville High School, as she was a sectional selectee from 2012-14; placed in the top 10 at the Illinois championships as a senior; and a team captain.

At Northern Colorado, she competed in the WAC Championships.

Studying for her masters’ degree in social work, Sanford also is head coach at nearby Pinehurst Country Club. Shew will be assisted by her brother, Brad, a junior at Michigan State who is transferring to Duke next school year. Michigan State announced it was cutting swimming.

“I am excited to welcome Jessica Sanford as our new boys swim coach,” Mullen principal Jeff Howard said. “She brings experience on the staff, energy and passion to the job and her coaching philosophy is very much in line with what we are trying to accomplish throughout the school. She will be a great addition!”

Said Mustangs athletic director Damian Brown: “We’re excited to have her. She has a ton of experience, so does her brother. It will be great for our boys to have a (Division I) swim coach, a current swimmer helping our team out. We’re just happy for her be a part of our team and see where they go.”
