AURORA -- Behind Sofia Choi and Kaitlin Zingler, Mullen grabbed an impressive second place as a team in Wednesday’s Centennial League Match No. 3 held at a weather-delayed Meadow Hills Golf Course.

“It turned out well, all things considered,” Mustangs head coach Kate Walker said.

The Mustangs, who totaled 250, were 15 strokes back of first place Cherry Creek.

Individually, Choi shot a 5-over-par 76 to finish fifth and Zingler 9-over 79 to tie for sixth.

And it all occurred during one of Colorado’s fickle-weather May days, including lightning.

Asked how pleased she was with the outcome, Walker said “absolutely. That was really challenging. The girls had to sit in their cars for almost an hour and a half because with the (coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic), people can’t congregate in the clubhouse and the outside awning (on the patio) was not safe.

“Then all of a sudden, Sofia had to go to the tee box. I think our players handled the situation much better than some other schools, some players who seemed to get flustered and frustrated. Our girls had great attitudes. They rose to the occasion.”

Choi, Class 4A runner-up as a freshman in 2019, turned in two birdies and went 39-37. Zingler didn’t manage a birdie and turned in 40-39.

Hannah Giacomin (95), Brie Brocato (126) and Kylie Morgan (132) also competed for the Mustangs.

Eaglecrest’s Emma Bryant shot even-par 71 to take medalist honors.
