'Stangs break into win column

Bond, Quinn propel 12-1 victory over host Northridge in 1st-ever meeting between the two programs.

Put Mullen boys lacrosse on the 2021 board.

The Mustangs rolled into Northfield on Friday night to take a 12-1 nonleague decision and it wasn’t without incident. The 6 p.m. starting time was delayed until after 6:30 as there were no referees on site. Ultimately, only one showed up, adding to the unusualness of the new Season D.

But head coach Matt Cawley and the Mustangs will take it and are 1-1. It was the first time the Mustangs had faced the third-year Nighthawks, who were playing their season opener.

“A win’s a win,” Cawley said. “And that’s not a bad team.

“I liked our defensive discipline. You can always do things better, but our goalkeeping was outstanding. Give up one goal and you take it.”

Coming off a 15-3 whipping to Monarch, Mullen also got its offense going. The Mustangs scored the game’s first 11 goals, six by Bond … Nicky Bond.

“It was awesome and good to see our team actually clicking,” said the sophomore attack. “We could have played better, but it was good to get the win.”

Bond regularly connected with senior Keegan Quinn, who turned in six assists along with three goals. Trevor Price added two goals and Ethan Karr another.  Bond and Dom Flores also contributed assists.

Noah Wanja was in goal for Mullen, which also got strong play by junior Connor Warren.

Improvement is imperative, Cawley said.

“We didn’t value the ball at all today,” he said of his players. “Our offense had a hard time seeing the ball, maybe, but just throwing and catching, I think we had a hard time with that (from the glare off the west side of the stadium).”

He also pointed to the delay with no referees, but will move on gladly to Wednesday’s home game against Prairie View, 7 p.m. It’s another opponent the Mustangs haven’t faced.

“There are a lot of things that are unknown right now,” Cawley said.
