Mullen rolls Blazers 10-0

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
'Stangs earn first win in 2021; freshman Parsons scores hat trick; Idle until Tuesday, when they will visit Cherokee Trail.

It could have been classified as a trap match and Mullen only flirted with taking the bait.

The Mustangs hosted Overland on Thursday in the Centennial League and the numbers were staggeringly one-sided – since 2009, the Trailblazers were 0-10 against the Mustangs, 0-74 in league and just 21-129-2 overall.

They got worse as the Mustangs beat the Trailblazers 10-0 in a match that was stopped in the second half because of the mercy rule.

Fortunately, Mullen, after leading by just 3-0 over the first 40 minutes, broke out in the opening minutes after halftime.

“In a game like this,” Mustangs head coach Matthew Guglielmo said, “what you’re looking for – and some of them have never seen it before – and what you want is to paint an accurate picture for (your team). You still need to play good defense and score goals right away. And you want to be sharp.

“There’s always potential for a mental and physical breakdown when you face someone you know you should beat by a lot. We had that for a part of the first half and we fixed it. We looked a lot better in the second half.”

Five Mustangs found the back of the net – freshman Mattea Parsons went for three goals, Katy DeNezza, Kate Vezzani and Zoe Polzin each had two, and Kendall Smith one. Concerning assists, DeNezza turned in three, senior Anna Seaman had two and Brooke Ellis, Anna Johnson, Jill Kulbacki, Polzin and Vezzani one.

Defensively, keeper Olivia Incitti faced just one shot.

Parsons’ were her first goals for Mullen and she said “it felt really good and I was set up nicely by teammates.”

And after an 0-2 start against a couple of good Class 5A programs, Parsons said “we gained a lot of confidence from this game.”

Guglielmo said he was delighted by Parsons’ play “and, yeah, 1-2 is great. We got going.”

The Mustangs will take on Cherokee Trail at Legacy Stadium on Tuesday, May 18, at 6 p.m.
