Girls lacrosse earns 1st victory behind Charlie Beck and Elise Bialecki;; baseballers listless in disappointing home loss to league-leading Cherokee Trail.
Mullen earned its first victory in girls lacrosse in 2021 with a 13-10 decision of Chaparral at EchoPark Stadium in Parker on Saturday morning.
The nonleague victory lifted Mullen to 1-2. Chaparral is 0-2.
“It was a really good team win,” Mustangs head coach Melynda Brown said. “The attackers achieved some of our goals, which were possessing (the ball) and game speed. We had a few lapses in transition defense and some miscommunications, which led to so many goals against … but (keeper) Lauren Krager came up some good saves and (sophomore) Elsa Heinze stepped up her one-on-one defense.”
Junior Charlie Beck and senior Elise Bialecki each scored three goals for Mullen, which trailed 7-6 at half.
“I believe it was the first time in four years that we came back after being down at halftime,” Brown said.
Maya Dammen, Molly Gilbert and Haley Vanek each scored twice and Emma Oliver once for the Mustangs, who enjoyed a season-high in goals. Gilbert and Oliver had assists.
Krager turned in eight saves.
Mullen also enjoyed 22 shots on goal, another season-high.
The Mustangs will be at parochial-rival Regis Jesuit in Aurora on Tuesday, 5:30 p.m., a chance to level their record.
“Overall,” Brown said, “we’re very happy with the team win and we need to bring our speed and energy for Regis.”

BASEBALL
CHEROKEE TRAIL 7, MULLEN 3: The Mustangs dipped to 2-2 with a home loss at Bill Swift Field to the Cougars.
Mullen is 2-2 overall and in the Centennial League.
Head coach Nick Arcuri was blunt concerning his players: “They didn’t want to be here. And if you don’t want to be here, you get your (butt) kicked.”
The game was moved from an 11 a.m. first pitch to 9 a.m. in an attempt to possibly avoid another storm and the Mustangs never really woke up – they has seven hits, but never rallied, and used three pitchers who were touched for 10 hits, five walks and a hit batter.
Junior Trevor Moore absorbed the loss for the Mustangs, Over three innings, he gave up three runs, six hits and hit a batter. Owen Marsh and Henry Shellhorn each threw 2.0 innings to finish.
Colin MacKenzie had three hits for Mullen and Sage Hurley had two. Henry Stewart and Marsh also hit safely. MacKenzie, Hurley and Marsh had doubles.
Mullen will be at Cherokee Trail, which is leading the league at 4-0, 5-0 overall, in Aurora on Monday, 4:15 p.m.
