Mullen track and field gaining experience and confidence; girls take 9 1sts at De La Salle Stadium, boys produce 6 winners.

Mullen hosted its part of the latest Centennial League track and field meet on Saturday at De La Salle Stadium.

The Mustangs competed with Arapahoe, Eaglecrest and Smoky Hill as restrictions keep the eight-team loop cut in half for regular-season meetings.

Of note, the Mustangs’ efforts among girls included nine firsts, notably a first-timer and another known nationally.

Sophomore Hanah Pachl won the discus with a throw of 80 feet, 3 inches.

“It was very exciting, especially my first time competing, but it was a lot of fun,” Pachl said.

She also could have won the shot put, but stepped out of the circle and settled for fifth.

“But next weekend, I’ll definitely have that,” she said. “It was a good learning experience.”

Dwol, who the Class 4A triple jump as a freshman and has been ranked nationally in the event, won her specialty on Saturday in 38 feet.

“It’s good,” she said. “There’s some stuff I need to fix.”

She’s battling shin splints, but said “I think I’ll do really well this season.”

And of just being able to compete after the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic eliminated the 2020 season, Dwol said “I love it. I missed it so much.”
