AURORA -- The Mullen-Regis Jesuit rivalry, relevant and heated for decades, hasn’t really taken hold in girls lacrosse.

But it may begin.

In the first meeting in eight seasons between the two parochial schools, Regis Jesuit beat the visiting Mustangs 18-4 on Tuesday at Lou Kellogg Stadium. The loss in the Class 5A East League dropped Mullen to 1-3 overall, 0-2 in league. The Raiders, ranked No. 5 in the latest poll, are 4-1, 3-0.

While Mullen owns a 4-3 edge over the Raiders since 2008, head coach Melynda Brown, in her first match against the Raiders, appreciated the familiarity between the players who also play together and face each other on the club level, but was more concerned how her team fared in another high-end matchup.

“It’s exciting on many levels,” she admitted, “but we, unfortunately, again played a top-five opponent and didn’t play our best lacrosse.”

Brown could see why – there was a lack of communication on defense, the Mustangs didn’t fare well in securing 50-50 balls and the real killer, she said, was poor draws.

Mullen, which was coming off its first victory, a 13-10 decision against Chaparral on the road, won just 5-of-24 draws “and that’s not good enough,” Brown said.

Elise Bialecki scored twice for Mullen, and Charlie Beck and Maya Dammen each had one.

Regis Jesuit also piled up 32 shots on goal against keeper Lauren Krager.

The ensuing 24 hours, Brown said, will be imperative as the Mustangs will host No. 2 Fairview on Thursday, May 20, 6 p.m., at De La Salle Stadium.

“We have a lot to do,” the coach said.
