Mullen drops a 6-1 league decision at Cherokee Trail; Mullen will host Eaglecrest on Thursday.
AURORA – Simply put, Class 4A Mullen ran into another very large 5A school.
And it showed – the Mustangs dropped a 6-1 match to Cherokee Trail on Tuesday night in the Centennial League at Legacy Stadium.
Mullen dipped to 1-3 overall and in league. The Cougars are 2-3, 2-3, and impressed Mustangs head coach Matthew Guglielmo.
“We had a plan,” he said. “We watched them and we thought we knew how to defend them and attack, but three or four of their goals were awesome, so credit to them.”
Guglielmo said a lead-in practice wasn’t encouraging “and it carried forward. We couldn’t complete passes … we weren’t sharp.”
The Mustangs trailed 3-0 at halftime. They cut it to 3-1 in the 42nd minute on a goal by Mattea Parsons from fellow freshman Kate Vezzani, but got no closer. Cherokee Trail gradually put it away.
“We were in it,” Guglielmo said of the rearly second-half score, “but we made a couple of mistakes and we paid for it.”
Mullen will resume league play on Thursday, May 20, at home against Eaglecrest, 4:30 p.m.
