Girls lacrosse earns 2nd league victory; girl tennis drops 1st dual, but Manwiller wins a biggie; Choi, Zingler dominate 9-hole event.
 
CENTENNIAL – Mullen snapped a two-match losing streak on Monday night with a 10-4 decision of host Arapahoe.

The victory in the new Class 5A East League upped the Mustangs’ overall mark to 2-4 and their league record to 1-3. It also lifted Mullen, which is competing against a high-end schedule, out of the bottom of the league.

The Mustangs, who led 6-2 at halftime, got two goals each by junior Charlie Beck and seniors Maya Dammen and Molly Gilbert. Senior Elise Bialecki, sophomore J.J. Johnson, senior Brenna Langfield and junior Haley Vanek also scored. Vanek added two assists and Gilbert had one.

In all, Mullen went for 15 shots on goal.

Keeper Lauren Krager turned in 11 saves.

The Mustangs will resume play on Wednesday, May 26, at home against winless Denver East, 5:30 p.m, at De La Salle Stadium.

GIRLS TENNIS

CHERRY CREEK 6, MULLEN 1

GREENWOOD VILLAGE – Mullen dropped its first dual match of the season, but senior Lauren Manwiller recorded a big victory.

While the 4A Mustangs lost the match 5-1 to the Bruins, who have dominated 5A girls tennis for decades, Manwiller, a senior, earned a three-set victory at the top spot. She beat the Bruins’ Jacqueline Pearsall 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.

Signed with Loyola-Maryland, Manwiller was coming off her only loss of the season, a two-setter to Smoky Hill’s Valerie Negin, the defending 5A No. 1 singles champion.

In all, Mullen won only five game sin the other six matches as the Bruins won each by sweep.

Next for Mullen is a home dual on Wednesday, May 26, at Pinehurst Country Club, against 4A D’Evelyn, first serves at 4 p.m.

GIRLS GOLF

In an individual, nine-hole event the past Thursday, Sofia Choi, Kaitlin Zingler and Elle Deorio finished, in order, first, second and third.

The shorter match pitted the Mustangs against Chatfield and Columbine.

A junior, Choi fired a 1-under par 30 at Foothills Golf Course’s executive nine. She made birdies on the par-3, 89-yard No. 2 and par-4, 288-yard No. 4. Zingler, a sophomore, turned in 38, including a birdie on the par-4, 332-yard No. 8. And Deorio, a senior, scored 46.

Brie Brocato was ninth (55) and Kylie Morgan 11th (57).
