CENTENNIAL – The lessons for a mostly younger Mullen team continued on Tuesday as Arapahoe, a regular Class 5A power, beat the Mustangs 4-0.
I
n dropping to 2-5 overall and in the Centennial League, the 4A Mustangs could only chase the Warriors (5-1, 5-1), who usually are at the head of the pack.

“We didn’t make any adjustments,” Mullen head coach Matthew Guglielmo said. “We felt we were OK, and if we just do what we do … we thought we played well, we were defending with zest … Arapahoe came out and finished, and beat us to the ball.”

The Warriors took the lead early, a goal in the fourth minute. Mullen later had a chance to level it on a penalty kick, but it wasn’t converted.

Into the second half, the Warriors methodically and gradually ran away, scoring in 50th, 65th and 70th minutes.

Mullen had no answers, but is moving forward.

“It has been a really good season,” senior Anna Seaman said. “We’ve been playing in a tough league and we’ve been playing
against players I’ve seen since my freshman year. We have a relatively young team, but the girls are good and we’re improving every game.”

The Mustangs will need it and are looking forward to displaying it – as was the case for the boys in league in the recent Season C, girls soccer in league in Season D has completed the regular season, a one-go-round through the Centennial. Next will be a league tournament.

Guglielmo is certain his Mustangs will be seeded No. 6 in the eight-team outlay, but there are possibilities that Overland and Smoky Hill, which have struggled, may not compete; there may be byes for the top two teams; and there may be only six teams in the ending field.

“Regardless,” the coach said, “we will play either the (No.) 1 or they’ll get a bye and we’ll play the (No. ) 3. What is good for us is we’ll play all of the best teams in the league again and we’ve improved so much. We have three more games to play.”
