It wasn’t what they expected, but who’s complaining?

Heading into Wednesday night’s Class 5A League No. 1 home matchup against Eaglecrest, Mullen expected a fight against the Raptors, who were 3-1 overall and had won their first two league games.

However, the Mustangs scored early and often in running to a convincing 15-1 crushing of Eaglecrest at Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium. Mullen moved to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the loop and tied with Pine Creek (4-0, 2-0) and a half-game behind Lewis-Palmer (6-0, 3-0).

Head coach Matt Cawley wans;t going to be fooled.

“That’s a big team, that’s a good team,” he said of the raptors. “They have a lot of club players.”

Senior attack Brandon Hane added: “I think we were a little on edge. I didn’t think it would be like that.”

The Mustangs rolled to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and kept at it. Hane scored a career-high seven goals and Keegan Quinn put in four. Nicky Bond had two, and Eion Canavan and Ethan Karr one apiece. In all, they had 12 unassisted scores.

“We came out, we ran our systems the right way for the first time and good things happened,” Cawley said. “And we had some guys back (from injury).”

Hane also noted the Mullen defensive effort and keeper Noah Wanja turned in a dozen saves.
Mullen will be at Overland in Aurora on Friday, May 28, before taking on Pine Creek (June 4) and LewIs-Palmer (June 9).

”We’ll have a little tougher stretch, but we’ll be ready to go,” Hane said.
