And now it begins for 'Stangs ...

Mullen blasts Overland for 5th consecutive victory; most-important stretch of the season begins.

GREENWOOD VILLAGE – Now, it will turn interesting for Mullen boys lacrosse.

After running past Overland 14-0 on Friday night at the Stutler Bowl, the Mustangs moved to 5-1 overall, 3-0 in the Class 5A No. 1 League. It was their sixth consecutive victory.

In a week, and with another one of the oddities of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that has forced this late Season D – one game next week and three the week after -- the Mustangs will host Pine Creek on Friday, June 4. And on Wednesday, June 9, they will be at Lewis-Palmer in Monument.

The matches will separate the three teams that currently sit atop the loop undefeated.

So the real fun will be here … soon.

“Now,” Mustangs head coach Matt Cawley said, “we’re ready to roll.”

Concerning the big picture, he added, “I think we’re bringing back a bunch of kids and we have more continuity … this is a whole new team except for five seniors. But it’s a brand new team, they’re learning how to play with one another. And we get ready for a big one.”

Senior Keegan Quinn agreed: “The next couple of weeks will be a good stretch, probably the most important of the year.”

On Friday, Brandon Hane again led the Mullen goal parade with four. Quinn, Chris Bougie and Luke Dempsey each had two, and Adam Archibald, Nick Gilbert, Trevor Price and Connor Warren all added one.

As for the next rounds and his team’s growth, Quinn said “we got our first-game jitters out, the send and third games we didn’t play our best, but now we’re playing well. From the start of the season until now, I’d say everyone is substantially better.”
