Girls tennis to host regional

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
At 2 sites -- Harlow Park and on campus -- Mustangs will host a 4A regional and are a threat to make state at all 7 positions.

Girls tennis will have first serves at the postseason in the new Season D.

Regional rounds will begin this week and Mullen will serve as one of the Class 4A hosts. On Tuesday, June 1, the Mustangs will lead Region 3 at Harlow Park (singles) and on campus, the Vicky Matarazzo  Courts (doubles).

“We feel good about it,” Mustangs head coach Jerra Sturgell said.

Mullen will contend with Bear Creek, Dakota Ridge, Denver North, Evergreen, Green Mountain, Golden and Wheat Ridge.

Second to Golden two years ago (there was no season in 2020), when the Mustangs also advanced at all of the seven singles and doubles spots, they are a contender for another team title as well as advance their 11 competitors intact again.

Play will begin at 8 a.m. and Sturgell suggested Tuesday may be the only day needed for completion. If not, play will finish on Wednesday.

Mullen is headed by senior Lauren Manwiller, signed with Loyola-Maryland, who was fourth in the Colorado 4A tournament in 2019 at No. 1 singles. Sturgell said she has legitimate opportunity at gaining the No. 1 seed into this year’s finale, to be held June 11-12 at Pueblo City Park.

Alexia Yost (No. 2) and Marin Smith (No. 3) have provided singles depth and skill as the Mustangs were 8-3 in dual matches (the only competition permitted because of the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic) and 6-1 in the Centennial League, second to Cherry Creek, the state leader in championships.

Mullen doubles – No. 1 Brooklyn Hanley-Parker Durand; No. 2  Izzy Desjardins-Tierney Scanlan Madeline Crites; No. 3 Aubryanne Leugers-Madeline Crites; and No. 4 Clara Dailey-Renee Hoyt 6-0, 6-0 – also should challenge for advancement.

“Lexi looks good,” Sturgell said. “Marin does, too. And the doubles are all competitive.”
