Mullen blasts Dakota Ridge

'Stangs erupt for 5 homers and 14 hits in a 13-1 pasting of the Eagles; Brady, Krza, Maffoni, Marsh and Terrones-Garcia all go deep; Moore slick on mound; winning streak reaches 6.

LITTLETON – It may have been Mullen’s most-complete game in the new Season D.

In easily handling Dakota Ridge 13-1 in five innings in Class 5A nonleague on a gorgeous Colorado late Wednesday afternoon, the Mustangs mashed five home runs, did not commit an error and rode the outstanding pitching of right-hander Trevor Moore.

And in having their winning streak climb to six games, the Mustangs, who began the week ranked No. 9 among big schools, are 9-3 overall, 8-3 in the Centennial League. Jefferson County’s Dakota Ridge dropped to 6-5.

“They swung the bats today,” head coach Nick Arcuri said of the Mustangs. “We had a good hitting session before we got here, so the kids did well.”

Well enough to record season highs in runs, home runs and hits -- in fact, homers by Andrew Brady, Ben Krza, Luca Maffoni, Owen Marsh, and Andres Terrones-Garcia at one of Colorado’s most-notorious band boxes also doubled Mullen’s long-ball output for the season.

In addition, Maffoni and Henry Stewart each had three hits and Moore and Terrones-Garcia had two. Brady had the interesting and impressive box-score line of 1-2-1-4 and Marsh and Terrones-Garcia each had three runs batted in.

“An awesome stretch for us,” Arcuri said.

On the mound, Moore was in command, permitting just two hits, walking one and fanning nine.

Asked if it was the most comfortable he has felt in 2021, Moore said “I don’t know if it has to do with comfortability, but I was definitely more focused … you know, just a few things, preparation, I think, for what the team did before hand; I think we all came out and we all hit amazing and my job was to just limit (the Eagles).”

He added that the Mustangs are working on not letting strikes get past them at the plate, particularly early in at-bats, and the pitching staff is intent on not giving any free passes.

Mullen’s busy stretch continues on Thursday, June 3, a third game in three days, with a home matchup at Bill Swift Field against Overland in league, first pitch at 4:15 p.m.

The Mustangs will cap their busy week on Saturday, with a trip to Aurora to complete the back-to-back with Overland, 11 a.m., at Utah Park.
