'Stangs end with a victory

Mullen beats Cheyenne Mountain in season finale; Molly Gilbert caps unusual season by reaching 101 career goals.

This was the end … the 2021 girls lacrosse season had its finale on Saturday, a fitting cap to a make-shift season in the new Season D and in many ways.

Mullen handled Cheyenne Mountain 12-5 in nonleague at Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium to finish 4-6.

Over a difficult seven weeks in which the season stretched into June, began later than normal, had limitations on the permitted number of matches, placement in a new league, direct conflict with summer down time as well as club play and various shortages of referees, the Mustangs attempted to focus on the positive.

At the front was senior Molly Gilbert, who surpassed the century mark in career goals. She scored six to climb to 101.

“I’m super, super excited for it,” said Gilbert, who will play at Colorado Mesa. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates – most of them came on assists. It’s pretty cool, especially in our last game and finishing with a great win.”

Said head coach Melynda Brown: “I’m really happy for her. She has played and started every single one of her games at Mullen, and if it wasn’t for (the coronavirus, COVID-19), it would be some type of record.”

The Mustangs held a 4-3 halftime lead and ran away over the final 25 minutes, implementing a stretch of seven consecutive scores. Elise Bialecki and Emma Oliver each scored two, and Maya Dammen and Jordan Weber contributed one apiece.

Brown termed the late season on the fly, which also had an outdoor, end-of-year banquet at the conclusion,  “a little crazy,” and admitted a “a 5-5 finish would have been nicer,” but “we played well together, getting a lot of feeds … I saw the progress I wanted to see throughout the season.”

Gilbert agreed: “It was super crazy, but it ended on a positive note. It was so amazing to play with all of these girls and I’m hopeful they’ll be able to watch me play (in college).”
