And now they wait ...

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
After 2 blowout victories at home, Mullen (8-2) must wait until Sunday to find out if it makes the playoff bracket.

They had consecutive blowout victories at home to cap their regular season.

They moved to 8-2 overall.

And they have won eight of their past nine matches.

But will they or won’t they make the playoffs?

Mullen crushed Rangeview 17-2 on Saturday night at Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium. And on Friday, the Mustangs pasted Douglas County 20-2 to complete their Class 5A League No. 1 slate.

But if there will be extra lacrosse for the Mustangs, it won’t be known until Sunday, when brackets are to be released.

“Now,” head coach Matt Cawley said, “we’re in the waiting game. I don’t know what the outcome will be. We have just as good of a chance to get in as not get in.”

Here’s what is known – there were new leagues across the board for the classification in this new season D, but the No. 1 group was the one not granted an automatic qualifier. The top 12 will advance based on RPI’s three categories.

And the Mustangs, before winning on Saturday, were No. 13 and out of the 12 by .001 of a point. Plus, one of the teams ahead of them had a losing record.

Saturday’s victory was paced by Brandon Hane’s six goals, four by Nicky Bond and two by Connor Warren.

As the Mustangs walked off the field, all they could do was wonder.
In this school year greatly affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Mustangs have watched their boys soccer and ice hockey teams put up strong records and narrowly miss the postseason.

“I don’t know how you don’t put in an 8-2 team,” Cawley said.
