Jump! Dwol's a champ

'Stangs' junior Agur Dwol wins 4A long jump on Day 1 of the Colorado meet; Mitchell-Ruff looks fast in shorter sprints; relays ready to rock.

:LAKEWOOD – Admittedly, Agur Dwol was a bit agitated doing the long jump on Thursday morning at Jefferson County Stadium.

“I was nervous,” she said during the Class 4A portion of the Colorado Track and Field Championships. “Usually, I’m not and it’s not, like, my big event.”

The Mullen junior realized she probably was concerned about balancing an event she has led all season in between qualification for one of the relays.

Ultimately, it worked out, especially for the long jump, which she won with her final leap of 18 feet, 11 inches.

And it wasn’t easy.

“She had a really good start,” Mustangs assistant girls head coach Darius Reed said. “She had to navigate the (400-meter relay preliminaries) in between the long jump prelims and finals. She had to get a fair jump (before running). And it was the first time all year we weren’t the top qualifier (in the long jump).”

Dwol posted an effort of 17-9.25 to advance before winning with the leap of nearly 19 feet.

The goal for Dwol is to surpass 20 feet and Reed said “we’re right there … I know it’s something we’ll get next year.”

Relieved is how Dwol described herself after winning and added she’s “feeling great.”

In prelims, Mustangs speedy senior Kaleah Mitchell-Ruff had the top time in the 100 at 12.01 seconds and was second in the 200, 25.03.

And the 800 relay team of Mikaela Henderson, Mitchell-Ruff, Paige Lousberg and Dwol came in third at 11:44.74.

In particular, Reed noted the contribution of Lousberg, who he said “ran her butt off and wa sled by some really good seniors.”

Competition continues today with rounds mostly dominated by prelims, including the 400, 800 and sprint-medley relays for the Mustangs as well as the final of the boys high jump.

The big cap to the meet with be all day Saturday.
Teamwise, Niwot grabbed the early lead, piling up 35 points. The Mustangs have 10 through Dwol’s victory.
