Manwiller heads 4A all-state

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Senior Lauren Manwiller is tops at No. 1 singles; 'Stangs honored at 3 of the 4 doubles spots; Jera Sturgell is coach of the year after winning the team title.

After leading Mullen to a team championship by also becoming the school’s first Class 4A No. 1 singles champion, Lauren Manwiller heads the recently released all-state team for girls tennis.

In her final season – Manwiller will play at Loyola-Maryland – she leads seven Mustangs players cited as well as head coach Jera Sturgell.

Manwiller lost only once in the delayed and coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic-affected Season D for spring sports that ran into June 26, the latest on record. All of her postseason matches the past month were won in straight sets, notably her four over two days in Pueblo in the Colorado tournament. It was her third state-tournament appearance.

She’s joined by three of Mullen’s four doubles teams that also won titles – No. 2 Izzy Desjardins-Tierney Scanlan, No. 3 Madeline Crites-Aubryanne Leugers and No. 4 Clara Dailey-Renee Hoyt.

4A-coach-of-the-year Sturgell recently completed her fifth season heading the Mustangs, who won their first Colorado title since 2006 and third overall. More than half of the Mustangs’ first 11 were new from 2019 – there was no season in 2020 – but they were 8-3 in dual meets and runners-up (6-1) in the 5A-based Centennial League.

Two of the Mustangs’ three singles players return for 2022 as do four of their eight in doubles.
