Fall '21: New look for boys tennis

New coach Sivalls, fewer returnees will challenge 'Stangs to stay among 4A's elite.

(Fifth in a series of Mustangs previews for Fall 2021.)

It’s a new look and fresh leadership for Mullen boys tennis.

The Mustangs, second the past two seasons at the Class 4A Colorado tournament, will be leaner in
terms of returning experience and new coach Zach Sivalls will be leading his first schoolboy team.

“I was convinced it was a good group of boys,” he said, “and it seems like it will be a lot of fun. I enjoyed my playing time in high school and college, so I get to relive it, which is nice.”

The former prep (Midland High in Texas), junior-college (Tyler) and college (Lipscomb) player has taught at multiple stops in Colorado and currently is at Columbine Country Club.

Mullen returnees of note include Jack Barker, a junior who played No. 3 singles a year ago, and doubles players Patrick Duke, Colin Mackenzie and Sean Phelps.

As usual, the Mustangs will compete in the 5A-based Centennial League before heading into the 4A postseason.

Admittedly, Sivalls said he knows little about the landscape and personnel, but is willing to learn quickly and excited to get his first season under way.
