A high 5 for Kerschen

Senior Eli Kerschen scores all 5 of Mullen's goals in a nonleague victory at Erie; 'Stangs are 2-0.

The match was supposed to occur on Wednesday, but no one could have been happier about the change to Thursday than Eli Kerschen.

The Mullen senior took full advantage of it – he scored all of his team’s goals in a 5-0 road victory at Erie in Class 4A nonleague.

“He was out of control,” Mustangs head coach Matt Degitis said of his senior forward. “He was wild.”

Originally scheduled for Wednesday before a problem landing officials, the Mustangs, now 2-0 and winners of 10 of their past 12 matches dating back to the odd Season C played in winter/spring earlier this year, travelled to Erie on Thursday. They took a 1-0 lead into halftime as Degitis said the Tigers “played us in the low block, they had 11 guys below the ball.”

Frustrated but undaunted, Kerschen scored four times over the final 40 minutes. Andrew DeBerardinis had two of the Mustangs’ assists.

Andrew McGrath and Carter Hill combined to stop three shots by Erie (1-1-1), which was 11-1 the past season.

But Kerschen, who now has 34 goals in 41 career matches and seven in his first two of 2021, was the story.

“He was terrific,” Degitis said.

Mullen will resume play on Wednesday, Sept. 1, a nonleague match at Thomas Jefferson.
