Softball wins in 5 innings; O'Connell 2nd for cross country.
 
Mullen erased an early deficit on the way to handling Standley Lake 14-4 in five innings on Saturday in nonleague play at Santo “Doc” Scavuzzo Field.

The Mustangs, with a second straight victory, moved to 4-2.

Despite five errors in the field, Mullen went for 13 hits, three – including two doubles -- by Ona Medina, who also scored three times and had three runs batted in.

She wasn’t alone – Avery Walters had three hits and drove home four. Cadence Hurtado had two hits and two RBIs. Morgan Margeson contributed two hits and leadoff Bella Aragon singled, scored three times and swiped four bases. Morgan Stewart scored twice, singled and stole two bases.

In the circle, Margeson was hit for four runs in the first inning, but allowed no more.

The Mustangs put it away with five-spots in each of the fourth and fifth stanzas.

CROSS COUNTRY
Mustangs girls took second place and boys were 7th in Saturday’s D’Evelyn Dash, the first meet of the season.

Individual highlights included Amy O’Connell finishing second (19 minutes, 12 seconds) and Elisa Brear fourth (19:26).

Kira Van der Steen (20:18) gave Mullen three within the top 10. Julia Brown (21:46) tied for 35th and Alicia Muller (21:52) tied for 38th as Mullen totaled 89 to Chatfield’s winning score of 49.

For boys, Jacob Sushinsky (17:10) was tops at eighth. Owen McCarter (17:52, 23rd), Travis Hockin (17:54, 24th), Diego Taboada-Cross (18:46, 35th) and Mason Atwell (19:01. 39th) completed Mullen scoring.

The boys finished with 129 points. The Classical Academy was first at 101.
