Brady again paces 'Stangs; softball loses slugfest to Regis; volleyball moves to 3-0; boys tennis 3rd in Springs.
 
Ryan Brady fired a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday to lead Mullen to a third-place team finish in the Strasburg Invitational at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora.

A sophomore, it was Brady’s second under-par round in three outings. He put together four birdies, three bogeys and 11 pars. Brady made the turn at 37 before coming home in 2-under 34. Three of his birdies came on the back nine, two on par 5s.

“It just kinda came to me,” Brady said in finishing tied for second.

He was two shots off the winning score on the 6,494-yard layout.

Brady was backed by Ethan Karr (80), John Yoder (84) and Ben Hawes (85).

Karr went 38-42 and followed his quadruple-bogey 7 on No. 11 with back-to-back birdies. Yoder (42-42) eagled the 502-yard, par-5 No. 6 and followed with a birdie on No. 7. Hawes (43-42) birdied the par-4 13th.

Mullen turned in a 235 total. Columbine (228) was first and Sterling (232) second in the 14-team field.

There were 55 individuals.

SOFTBALL

The Mustangs were rocked for 16 hits, committed three errors and gave up five unearned runs in losing to the visiting Raiders at Santo “Doc” Scavuzzo Field in nonleague.

Mullen is 4-3. Regis Jesuit snapped a nine-game losing skid and is 2-9.

Trailing 4-0 before coming to bat, Mullen quickly out up seven runs in the first inning, but lost the lead by the third.

Mullen had 13 hits, two each by Morgan Stewart, Avery Walters, Cara Newman and Emmy Holz, who also was tops on the team with four runs batted in. Ona Medina, Bella Aragon, Newman and Holz each doubled. And Aragon turned in a handful of fine defensive plays in center field.

The Mustangs also walked seven times and stole nine bases, but stranded 10.

They will host regular-power Frederick on Wednesday (Sept. 10), first pitch in nonleague at 4 p.m.

It’s their second of a four-game week.

The Mustangs are off to a 3-0 start.

They defeated host Colorado Academy 25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 25-21 on Tuesday in nonleague.

Mullen also knocked CA (3-1) from the unbeaten ranks.
 
Boys Tennis

The Mustangs were third in the past weekend’s Air Academy Kadet Kickoff.

They finished behind Palmer Ridge and Pine Creek.
