Mullen takes a 5-2 dual at Cherokee Trail in the Centennial League.

AURORA – Mullen went 1-1 the past two days in dual-match tennis.

The Mustangs won a road dual at Cherokee Trail on Tuesday, 5-2 in the Centennial League, and were swept 7-0 in nonleague on Wednesday.

The Mustangs, battling injury and sickness, according to first-year head coach Zachary Sivlls, won twice in singles and three times in doubles.

“We’re playing good, but it will be interesting to see how we do with the injuries,” the coach said.

Sivalls said he had to bring up three players to varsity.

Patty Duke and Josh Wanja won at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively, and Joe Murphy dropped a tight 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 match at No. 2.

Against parochial-rival Regis Jesuit, the Mustangs welcomed back a couple of regulars from injury, but only managed to push three of the matches to three sets.

Mullen is 3-4 in duals in 2021.

The Mustangs will have a league dual on Thursday, Sept. 16, at Smoky Hill in Aurora, 3:45 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 19, they will participate in the Kent Denver Invitational along with Niwot and the host Sun Devils. First serves will be at 8 a.m.
