Mullen’s first foray into the 2021 postseason begins on Tuesday, Sept. 21, on the road.

Mustangs boys golfers are in Montrose for Class 4A Region 4 play at The Links at Cobble Creek, one round, 18 holes.

Sophomore Ryan Brady, senior Ben Hawes, junior Ethan Karr and sophomore Jack Newton will represent Mullen as a team and individually. They will be competing against players from Battle Mountain, Central (G.J.), Denver North, Denver South, Durango, Thomas Jefferson, Montrose, Northfield, Palisade, Rifle, Steamboat Springs, Summit and George Washington.

Twenty-one golfers from each of the four 4A regionals will advance – two full teams and 13 individuals not on a qualifying team. The fourth individual on a qualifying team must be within 10 strokes of the last individual qualifier not on one of the teams that advanced.

The 84 qualifiers for the state tournament (Oct. 4-5) will compete at the newly revamped City Park Golf Course in Denver.

A shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. will have Karr and Brady, Mullen’s top player, teeing off at No. 1; Newton at No. 17; and Hawes at No. 18.

Cobble Creek will play to 6,610 yards a par 36-36—72. It sits at the base of the San Juan Mountains and was established in 1999.

Mullen has been a regular winner and challenger in the regional team chase and was second as a team at the 2020 4A state tournament, including taking the runner-up and third-place individual spots.
