If, as it’s said, every shot counts in golf, it certainly did for Mullen on Tuesday.

The Mustangs managed to grab second place by one shot in Class 4A Region 4 at The Links at Cobble Creek in Montrose.

They edged Steamboat Springs 234-235 for second place to nail one of the two automatic team bids to the midrange version of the Colorado Tournament to be held Oct. 4-5 at Denver’s City Park Golf Course. They also missed winning the region by a stroke – host Montrose totaled 233.

“It was intense,” Mustangs head coach Jerry Koehler said.

Ryan Brady (75), Jack Newton (77) and Ethan Karr (82) accounted for the Mullen scoring and Ben Hawes (91) also advanced to the finale by finishing within 10 strokes of the region’s individual qualifiers not on a team that qualified.

Brady, a sophomore, made one birdie – on the par-4, 401-yard No. 14 – on the 6,610-yard layout in going 37-38. He parred 10 of his first 11 holes in finishing third, just two strokes off the pace as no competitor matched par or went under it.

Newton, another sophomore, was sixth by turning in 38-39 with a birdie on the par-3 No. 5 and an eagle on the 504-yard, par-5 16th.

Karr, a junior who earlier in the season recorded a hole-in-one, was 13th. He birdied the par-4 No. 6 and overcame triple-bogey 8 on the par-5 ninth to come home in 3-over 39.

Hawes, a senior (45-46), was 34th.

The individual winner was Colin Kagan, a junior at Steamboat Springs who shot 1-over 73 with three birdies. Montrose’s Norman Richmond was runner-up at 74, also with three birdies.
