Net gain: 'Stangs set for state

Duke and 2 doubles teams will represent Mullen at the Class 4A Colorado Tournament, Thursday-Saturday in Pueblo.
 
At the net, Mullen boys tennis players are headed to Pueblo for the Class 4A Colorado Tournament to be held Thursday-Saturday (Oct. 14-16) at the Steel City’s City Park.

The Mustangs, second as a team a year ago and winner at No. 2 singles, will have three entries – Patty Duke at No. 2 singles, Nicholas Ruegsegger-Carlos Pena at No. 2 doubles and Noah Wanja-Jackson Alexander at No. 4 doubles.

Duke and Ruegsegger-Pena are recent 4A regional champions; Wanja-Alexander are runners-up.

A junior, Duke will open the first round against D’Evelyn’s Carter Smith, a senior.

Ruegsegger-Pena will begin against Denver South’s Ty Braesch-Wyatt Schmitt.

And Wanja-Alexander will take on Niwot’s Rex Wellington-Ollie Jones.

Each of the three singles brackets and four in doubles will have 16 entries.

Matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. each day with finals slated for Saturday.
