Brear to run at Lehigh

Senior Elisa Brear commits to Mountain Hawk cross country; readying for Friday's regional.

In the last couple of years, Elisa Brear dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic, discovered cross country as a favorite sport and moved to Colorado.

Within the next year, she’ll be distance running at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

Funny how these things work out …

The Mullen senior recently announced her commitment to the Mountain Hawks in Bethlehem, Pa., as the Mustangs prepare for this week’s Class 4A regionals.

“I’m really excited,” Brear said. “I mean, I used to actually play basketball as my main sport … I wanted a way to stay in shape, so I just joined for fun to be with one of my friends. I actually started liking it a lot and randomly I got good at it.”

Brear came to Mullen from Monte Vista High School in Danville in the San Francisco Bay area. She describes herself as “an outdoorsy person,” and considers Colorado an ideal place to live.

As for making the jump to competing at altitude, she said, “every week it has gotten easier and easier. And I can work on things.”

Plus, “the girls who run here,” she said, “are so much better compared to what I was used to.”

Overall, she added, “it’s kind of fun to be surrounded by that.”

As for Lehigh in the Patriot League, Brear, who has a 3.5 grade-point average while taking advanced-placement classes, will major in graphic design and said she was excited about touring the school and meeting the team and staff.

Consistently Mullen’s No. 2 runner in 2021, Brear said she has “high hopes” for her team in Friday’s state-qualifier in Evergreen on Friday, Oct. 22.
She’ll also give basketball another try at Mullen when practice begins next month and will run track in the spring.

Brear will sign with Lehigh in November during the early period.
