'Stangs headed to Montrose for a pool play in Region 8; Mead also is in the mix; 2 victories needed to advance to state.

It will be a five-hour drive, each way, for Mullen in Class 4A Regionals.

And there are no complaints from Mustangs head coach Jeff Oliver.

“It’s a pretty decent draw for us,” he said. “And it could have been a lot worse.”

The Mustangs are the No. 29 seed in the 36-team field and will head to No. 8 Montrose on Saturday. No. 17 Mead is the third team in the mix.

“We’ve been playing a lot better and we’re working on finishing the games off,” Oliver said.

Mullen is 10-13.

Sophomore Devon Moore leads the Mustangs in kills and is followed by junior Liv Beckish (104). Beckish is tops in aces (32). Carmela Carbone leads in blocks (32), Madeline Karr is first in digs (320) and Lia Dino is the team leader in assists (168).

Montrose is 17-6 and Mead 13-10.

The first match, Mullen vs. Montrose, will be at 10 a.m. and the ensuing games will follow after 15-minute breaks. Mullen also has Match 2, vs. Mead.

There are 12 regions and one team from each, after two victories, will advance to the state tournament on Nov. 11-13 at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs.
