Dwol sets all-time Colorado best
Mullen senior goes 42-0.75 in the triple jump; it's the best in the U.S. so far this season and surpassed a 19-year mark by nearly a foot.
It looks like Agur Dwol will have a considerable track-and-field season.
The past weekend, the Mullen senior turned in an all-time best for a Colorado schoolgirl. Competing for Mile High Track Club, the two-time-defending Class 4A triple jump champion turned in an effort of 42 feet, three-quarter inches at the Air Force Academy.
It surpassed the 42-0 by Montbello’s Toni Smith in 2003 and also is the best of the season in the U.S.
“I did not expect us to go further than 41-8, this being our opener,” Mullen new head coach Darius Reed said. “But with the work she has put in, it’s not surprising. And considering she had injuries last year at state, she could have gone that far.”
Dwol, who signed with Oklahoma’s Sooners in November, battled hip and quad issues the previous season, Reed said.
Early in 2022, Dwol’s leap leads Texas’ Skylynn Townsend (41-8.75) and Leah Anderson (41-6) on the national list.
Reed said Dwol’s jump “kind of caught her off guard … she’s pretty reserved, but she knew it was a good jump.”
Next for Dwol is a meet this weekend in Gunnison at Colorado Western University.
“Based on practice and what she’s capable of,” Reed said, “she can go farther in the weeks and months to come.”
The national high-school record for girls is 44-10.
“She’s shooting for a lofty goal and I think we can get at least close,” Reed said.
