'Stangs dominate forfeit-filled Centennial League dual; Mullen wins 54-15; Strong tourney in Florence is next; latest On The Mat Rankings included.

Mullen remained undefeated in dual meets on Thursday, taking a 54-15 romp over Overland in the Centennial League at the Old Gym.

The Mustangs have won 14 head-to-head meets to date in 2021-22.

Top-ranked in Class 3A on the strength of five front-liners, the Mustangs won three matches and took six others by forfeit.

Defending 3A 106-pound Colorado champion Dale O’Blia, Noah Linares (132) and Colin Hart (152) each won by fall.

Afterward, Mustangs head coach John Howes implored his team, as it heads into the stretch run of the regular season, to wrestle hard, listen to direction and not over-think. “It’s not rocket science,” he said.

Mullen, which fared well at an all-class meet the past weekend at Cheyenne Mountain, will resume action on Saturday, Jan. 15, in Florence for the Mel Smith Invitational. Howes said it’s a very strong field as the Mustangs will compete with Alamosa, Bayfield, Bennett, Berthoud, Brush, Buena Vista, Canon City, Centauri, Delta, Eaton, the host Huskies, Fort Morgan, Gunnison, James Irwin, La Junta, Lakewood, Manitou Springs, Monte Vista, Olathe, Pagosa Springs, Platte Valley, Rye, Salida, Sterling, The Classical Academy, University, Valley and Weld Central.

As for the week’s On The Mat rankings, the Mustangs stayed atop 3A, ahead of No. 2 Eaton and No. 3 Jefferson. Individually, O’Blia remains No. 1 at 106; Gilbert Antillon is No. 3 at 113; Linares is No. 2 at 132; Mark Troni has taken over No. 1 at 160; and Kaleb Valdez-Lemos is No. 2 at 170.
