'Stangs roll a 7 on signing day
Five in football and 2 in boys lacrosse make for a fortunate class.
Mullen rolled a Lucky 7 on the latest signing day.
Five Mustangs will play college football and two others will compete in lacrosse after Thursday’s ceremony that was delayed a day by the recent snowstorm.
In football, Juan Bertaud, a defensive back, will play at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.
Bertaud is a two-year letter winner, all-Class 5A Jefferson County League honorable mention and academic all-state.
He has a 3.41 grade-point average and will major in marketing.
Jordan Marin, outside linebacker-free safety, will play at McPherson College in Kan.
Marin twice won a letter and also played baseball.
He will major in health sciences.
Jaxon Heil, a safety-linebacker, will play at New Mexico State.
Heil earned four letters, was all-league three times, all-academic twice and twice was named team MVP. He also earned subject awards in English, Geometry, Sports Medicine and Reasons for the Faith.
He has a 4.21 GPA and will major in mechanical engineering.
C.J. Segraves signed with St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
He earned two letters, interned with Mullen Sports Medicine and was a senior leader on two freshman retreats.
With a 3.3 GPA and honor-roll recognition, Segraves will major in economics and environmental studies.
Connor Warren, an outside linebacker, will play at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
He was among the team’s top tacklers and all-league.
Warren has a 4.47 GPA and will major in business.
“Oh, I’m very pleased,” Mustangs football head coach Jeremy Bennett said. “These kids have worked hard and I think it shows we had some good football players.”
He added there should be additional signings in April.
Two of head boys lacrosse coach Matt Cawley’s seniors also will move on to the next level.
Dominick Flores will play at Benedictine in Lisle, Ill.
A defenseman, Flores has earned three letters and wrestled as a freshman.
He has a 3.1 GPA and will major in business.
And Lance Hart will play at Hope College in Holland, Mich.
The defenseman has won three letters and another in tennis. He was defensive player of the year in lacrosse, two-time team captain and team captain in tennis.
Torch Award winner, Lasallian Ambassador and four-time Student Council member, Hart has a 4.3 GPA and will have a double major – accounting and psychology.
“It was fun,” Hart said of the recruiting process. “It was awesome. I loved it and got to meet a lot of great coaches along the way. I’m excited to go.”
