Superlative 'Stangs sending 9 boys and a girl to state wrestling; girls hoopers gaining momentum, boys struggling; ice hockey drops a pair; girls swim and dive wraps up season.
 
Mullen completed another outstanding weekend of wrestling – the Mustangs, with four individual champions, won the Class 3A Region 3 team chase, had four weight-class champions and will send nine competitors into this week’s Colorado Championships.

With 181.5 points, Mullen, competing at Holy Family in Broomfield, outdistanced runner-up Fort Morgan (170.5) and third-placed Jefferson (162).

Individually, Dale O’Blia (106 pounds), Noah Linares (132), Mark Troni (160) and Kaleb Valdez-Lemos (170) each finished first for the Mustangs.

O’Blia, the defending 3A 106 winner, turned in two first-period pins and capped it with an unusually close 2-0 decision in the final. He is 40-0 in 2021-22.

Linares had a technical fall and a couple of decisions in moving to 39-6 for the season.

Troni is 38-3 after two first-period pins and a decision.

And Valdez-Lemos is 41-4 after three falls.

In addition, Gilbert Antillon (113, 31-9) was second; Adam Domenico (145, 26-14) was third; and Cayden Robbins (120, 18-16), Oliver Scelza (182, 13-10) and Ami Hall (220, 7-8) were fourth.

And in the second season of sanctioned girls wrestling, senior Alina Antillon (136), who competes for Jefferson as Mullen doesn’t field a full team, pinned her way through Region 2 in Fort Lupton to move to 37-0. She had four falls in a total of 3:29.

State competition will begin on Thursday morning.
 
Basketball

Mustangs girls improved to 14-6 overall and 6-3 in the Centennial League with a 64-43 home decision of Cherokee Trail at Hutchison Fieldhouse.

Gracie Gallegos rolled to 17 points and Kilah Freelon added 15. Allison Schwertner contributed 11.

Freelon also topped the Mustangs with nine rebounds.

In boys, the Mustangs dipped to 6-13, 2-9 after an 81-66 home loss to Cherokee Trail.

Mullen was outscored 36-15 in the fourth quarter.
 
Ice Hockey

With 5-0 and 4-0 losses to Kent Denver over the weekend, a young, inexperienced Mullen dropped to 1-15-1.

The Mustangs also are 1-5-1 in the 4A North.
 
Girls Swim & Dive

In the 4A Colorado Championships held Thursday-Friday at the VMAC in Thornton, the Mustangs were 30th in the team chase with six points.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Stella Zinis, Ginger Hartman, Shannon McCarthy and Sarah Vasten finished 18th in 1 minute, 46.56 seconds.

The 200 medley relay group of Zinis, Ashley Terry, Grace Champagne and Alyssa Terry was 22nd (1:59.90) and did not place.

And the 400 free relay team also was 22nd (Anne Kozlevchar, McCarthy, Alyssa Terry and Champagne), finishing in 4:05.63.
