'Stangs baseball sweeps Erie at home after schedule change; boys lax falls to defending Colorado champ.

For openers, Mullen baseball scrambled and got it done.

After switching their opening games from the Western Slope because of unfavorable conditions from recent inclement weather, the Mustangs instead began at home on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Erie in nonleague play at Bill Swift Field.

The Class 5A unranked Mustangs struggled at the plate in the opener but overall were strong on the mound and in the field, playing error-less ball.

In the opener, Henry Shellhorn earned the victory in relief of Henry Stewart. Mullen took advantage of nine walks by Tigers pitchers. Stewart and Ryan Jackson had doubles.

In the second game, the Mustangs went for 10 hits, including a home run by Trevor Moore and two doubles by Stewart.

New head coach Phil Stanford said he was pleased with the pitching of Owen Marsh, who struck out six in 4.2 innings.
