“It was another one of those crazy games,” Phil Stanford said.
The Mullen head coach wasn’t kidding – the Mustangs dropped an 11-8 decision to Legacy at Bill Swift Field on Saturday. And the thing is, the way it ended floored them to state the least.
Trailing by two runs heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Class 5A No. 6 Mustangs came alive for a splendid six-run rally and appeared to be in firm command.
However, the Lightning erupted for a seven-run seventh to move to 3-0.
Add another interetswing fact to the mix – afterward, the No. 10 Lightning went crosstown to Aurora and knocked off No. 1 and previously undefeated Regis Jesuit.
Trailing 4-2, Stanford acknowledged “the guys did what they needed to do.” Mullen, now 5-2, sent 11 batters to the plate in taking its first lead and pushing it to 8-4. Henry Stewart, who also started on the mound, began it with a double and finished it with a two-run single. In between, Andrew Brady, Owen Marsh, Sage Hurley and Colin MacKenzie drew walks, and Trevor Moore and Dom Gamueda came up with run-scoring safeties.
But the Lightning didn’t come close to being done, sustaining its offense with a seven-run answer against freshman Thomas Stewart, all but one unearned, along with six hits as the Mustangs also came unglued a bit in the field.
They managed only a leadoff single by Marsh in the bottom half.
“We didn’t do what we needed to do to finish it,” Stanford said in lamenting an assortment of miscues. “We let our emotions get the best of us and we didn’t handle it well.”
Stanford credited Legacy as well as reliever Aaron Fuentes and Henry Stewart, who battled out of trouble early.
The Mustangs will open Centennial League play on Tuesday, April, 5, at home against Grandview, first pitch at 4:15 p.m.
