Behind Kaitlin Zingler, Mullen girls golfers finished in second place in Centennial League Match No. 2 held Thursday at Foothills Golf Course.

A junior, Zingler fired a 1-over-par 74 to finish five strokes behind Cherry Creek’s Kaylee Chin, who shot 4-under 69.

Zingler went 37-37 over the 5,546-yard layout. She had a birdie on each side.

Senior Sofia Choi tied for seventh at 83. Freshman Sammy Yates shot 88 followed by another freshman, Riley Sullivan (95), and senior Hannah Giacomin (97).

Teamwise, Mullen totaled 340 to take runner-up to Cherry Creek.

Baseball

In earning a Centennial sweep of Grandview, the Mustangs downed the host Wolves 7-4 in Aurora.

Mullen, ranked No. 8 in 5A, moved to 7-2 overall and is 2-0 in league, a half-game behind Cherokee Trail.

Freshman Thomas Stewart, whose sacrifice fly won Saturday’s game against the Wolves at Bill Swift Field in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday, was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and scored a run. Senior infielder Andrew Brady was 3-for-3, including a double, with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Colin MacKenzie had two of Mullen’s 10 hits and scored twice.

On the mound, senior Henry Stewart, signed with Santa Clara, earned the victory. He gave up six hits in six innings, allowed one run and struck out five. Aaron Fuentes and Thomas Stewart pitched the seventh.

Mullen will head to Pueblo West on Saturday, April 9, for a 5A nonleague game, first pitch at noon.

Girls Soccer

The Mustangs were shut out by host Cherry Creek 4-0 in league at the Stutler Bowl in Greenwood Village.

Mullen, which trailed only 1-0 at halftime, is 3-4 overall, 0-2 in league.

“It’s a tough one,” head coach Matt Degitis said. “It’s a bad matchup for us. (The Bruins) are very fast and it’s a tough night for us.”

However, Degitis said his team, in 4A, playing in the 5A-based Centennial will help prepare the Mustangs later in the season.

Mullen will take on host George Washington on Saturday, April 9, 3 p.m., in nonleague.

Girls Tennis

In a meeting of defending state-championship programs, the 4A Mustangs were swept by the 5A Bruins 7-0 at Pinehurst Country Club.

Now 1-1 in Centennial dual meets, Mullen also went down in straight sets at each draw.

Mullen will resume action on April 11, when it will host D’Evelyn in a make-up match in nonleague, first serves at 3:30 p.m.

In Aurora, the Mustangs lost a league dual at Grandview 208-109.
