'Stangs boys open league with an 8-3 victory; girls drop another one-goal game.
 
Mullen earned its first victory in nearly a month with an 8-3 decision of Boulder on Wednesday night.

In another cold, windy match at Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium, the Mustangs moved to 2-6 overall in the Class 5A League No. 1 opener.

And it was their first victory in Colorado – the Mustangs’ beat Santa Fe Christian in California on March 18.

Nicky Bond and Toby Grosso each scored twice for the Mustangs. Chris Bougie, Henry Bell, Ed Konizeski and Connor Warren added goals. Luke Dempsey registered a couple of assists, and Warren and Jeff Witwer added single helpers.

Noah Wanja turned in nine saves and the Mullen defense was strong – the Panthers only scored in three of the quarters, none with more than one score.

Mullen will head to Colorado Springs on Saturday, April 16, for a match at Pine Creek, 3 p.m., in league.

Girls Lacrosse

The Mustangs, who led at halftime, dropped another one-goal decision, 10-9 at Denver East.

Mullen dipped to 3-5 overall, 1-3 in the 5A East League.

On Monday, the Mustangs lost 11-10 to Palmer Ridge in the final seconds.

Leading 8-6 at halftime, the Mustangs managed only one more goal.

Idle for eight days, next is a league match against Arapahoe, April 21, at Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium in league, 6 p.m.
