New league for Mullen in '22

By Neil H. Devlin, Mullen Sports Information Director
Schedule confirmed for next season -- 5 nonleague and 5 in the new Front Range League South.

The 2022 season for Mullen football will be different.

Having switched leagues multiple times the past decade, the Mustangs will be in a new group, the Front Range League South, and take on programs not usually on their schedule.

Mullen will be with Brighton, Legacy, Horizon, Prairie View and Rangeview, so both the home games at Brother Bernard Kinneavy Field at De La Salle Stadium and road trips will be unusual in the first of a two-year cycle.

And the competition from Mullen’s previous groups – the Mustangs are coming off a stay in the Class 5A Jefferson County League -- will be just as dissimilar.

“Although I may not be the biggest fan of the competition in the new league,” head coach Jeremy Bennett said, “I think it will help us as a program to generate excitement.”

Concerning nonleague, it will be Columbine, expected 4A power Erie, a trip to California, Lakewood and Pine Creek, another regular 4A heavyweight that is moving up.

“We needed to make sure we scheduled some games to help our RPI,” Bennett said.

The out-of-state trip will be against Santa Margarita Catholic in the very talented Mission Viejo in the Trinity Classic.

“We’re very excited to get back to traveling and getting Mullen student-athletes exposed to top-level competition,” Bennett said.

In 2022, there will be 42 big-school teams. Each will play five nonleague games and five in league.

“Our kids are excited in our third year (together) and it’s starting to become our system fully,” Bennett said. “Even though we graduated a great senior class with great young men, I think we’re ready.”
