4-19 Spring Roundup

Baseball, Moore beat Buffs; girls soccer wins over Cherokee Trail; boys swim and dive falls at Smoky.

Now on the back side of the regular season, Mullen baseball is in a position to earn victories, work on specifics and experiment a bit.

The Mustangs used that approach to beat Smoky Hill 11-1 in six innings at Kevin Wolitzky Field in Aurora on a suddenly pleasant and warm Tuesday. It pushed them to 10-3 overall, 4-1 in the Centennial League.

It also gave Stanford signee Trevor Moore a chance to earn some innings on the mound, keep the starting lineup sharp, work on base-running and get substitutes some action.

“Absolutely,” head coach Phil Stanford said of his Class 5A No. 5-ranked team. “The plan going in was to see how far we could extend Trevor. He knew he had a pitch count and he said he felt really good and felt really strong.”

Said catcher Ryan Brady: “(Moore) threw really well today. We had a couple of errors and it was the first time we’ve gone together, but it was fun to see the different combinations and matchups, and his stuff was really good.”

Moore went 5 innings, allowed only two hits, walked one, gave up an unearned run and fanned 10.

At the plate, senior Colin MacKenzie, who pitched a scoreless sixth inning, was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in and a double. Owen Marsh doubled, homered and drove home two in addition to scoring twice. Dom Gamueda had two hits, one a triple, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Brady and Thomas Stewart also scored twice with Brady adding two hits.

“They did a great job all around,” Stanford said.

The Mustangs will host the Buffaloes on Thursday, April 21, at Bill Swift Field, first pitch at 4:15 p.m.
