Moore, 15-hit attack spark 11-1 win over Cherokee Trail; Mustangs are up one with 5 to play in the loop.

Mullen met its current competition for Centennial League honors on a pleasant Saturday.

And the Mustangs delivered for some separation.

They beat Cherokee Trail 11-1 in five innings at Bill Swift Field to take control of the loop. Now 14-3 overall and ranked as high as fifth in various polls and on various lists, Mullen sits alone at the top at 8-1. Cherokee Trail is a game back at 12-5, 7-2.

The Mustangs have five Centennial games to play, including at Cherokee Trail in Aurora on Tuesday, May 3, 4:15 p.m.

Head coach Phil Stanford didn’t hide his excitement.

“It was fantastic,” he said.

The Cougars got a home run in the first inning off Mullen starter and winner Trevor Moore, but he shut them down into the fifth inning. Owen Marsh got the last two outs in relief.

Offensively, Mullen rolled to 15 hits, three each by Andrew Brady and Dom Gamueda. Six of the safeties went for extra bases, including a double and homer by Brady. Sage Hurley, Ben Krza and Henry Stewart each had two hits and Moore, Marsh and Thomas Stewart all had one.

Mullen scored in all four of its innings as Stanford said he was pleased “we answered back. Everybody hit, we had great base-running and it was a heck of a team win.”
